I was thinking to myself, or more appropriately, deciding that this is not happening. “This can’t be it”, I heard myself saying. I knew that there was more to this; there had to be more than just this. This can’t end here, they can’t end this way. I needed a do-over; I needed another chance; I deserved another chance.
No sooner did I realize that I needed another chance, the next moment took me back; I was reliving from a few moments earlier. Gone was the pain, that of the stinging needle. Instead, I felt a shove on my back; the exact same shove from a while ago. I almost fell forward. As soon as I straightened myself up, I felt hands encircling my wrists.
“This is it”, I said to myself. Quick thinking made me drop on one knee. In a jiffy, I moved slightly back, shoved my shoulder into the groin of the man behind me, heaved him high into the air and dropped him, with a thud, at my feet. Before I could plan the next move, the very next second, all I could hear was a rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire. I didn’t have time for anything else, let alone rest on my laurels.
“Fuck”, I cursed myself for being so short sighted. I took one man down but left the rest of the rat-pack in control of everything. They could see everything that had been happening. I need another do-over; I deserved another do-over. The next time, I was going to knock the light out, put everyone in the dark, literally.
There I was again, at the very next instant, back in the past. This time, I was prepared; I had planned exactly what I should do. There it is; I felt was a shove. The next thing was the string around my wrists.
“Now”, I commanded myself. I, once again, dropped down, shoved my shoulders into the groin of the one behind me, lifted him up, and hurled him against the only light bulb, which was right above his head. He crashed into the bulb, took it out, and plunged everything into darkness before falling with a thud next to my feet.
Rat-a-tat-tat! Once again the gurnfire erupted.
“Fuck fuck fuck”, I cursed again. I felt stupid, even more than how I felt earlier in the future, for my shortsightedness. Those bastards knew where everyone was and could take us down even in darkness. Do-over time, now! This time, I need an earlier start. Having my hands tied behind my back was as useless and no do-overs at all.
Everything happened instantaneously, in the order of micro-seconds. Next thing I knew, I was shoved, again, into the car.
“Yes”, I felt elated. “I have more space and time, literally”.
I turned around and mapped where everyone of those bad guys were. I was prepared, this time, for sure. I waited for the string around my wrist. As soon as I felt it, I repeated my exercise. I knelt, shoved, lifted and slammed the one behind me into the ceiling. He took the light off. The difference this time, however, was that I flung him over his mates and not dropped him at my feet. Yeah, I hurled him on the others and he took them down with him.
I ran, in the darkness, towards the ones that fell down. I wanted to get to them, or actually, to their guns before anyone else does. Mid-stride, I heard the horrid sound again – rat-a-tat-tat. My hands were tied and I could do nothing. Again.
“Fuck! Too late”, I realized. I need a different plan, a different approach, especially, one that blinded everyone else and not me. Even better if my hands were free and not tied up.
The hands pushed me into the car. This time, I felt, confident. I had a thing up my sleeve.
This time, I wasn’t about to get knocked down. As soon as I felt the hands on my back, I spun around, grabbed man’s wrists, turned him about and used him as a shield. Before anyone realized what was happening, I punched the bulb above me. Darkness, again. However, as I predicted, there was no gunfire. That rat-pack couldn’t fire as I had one of them as a shield.
The sound of silence, I took that as a good sign.
“Everyone, close your eyes!”, I yelled shattering the silence. “NOW!”
As expected, the ones I wanted to close their eyes, including her, closed theirs. The ones I wanted to keep their eyes open, the rat-pack, didn’t. In fact, they did the opposite. They put on their night vision equipment. I was prepared for this too; something told me that this would happen. This is where what I had up my sleeve will come handy. I loosened my grip on his wrists, the human shield’s. I was sure he wouldn’t struggle as his life was on the line. I held both his wrists with my left hand, moved my right into my jacket’s pocket.
“There it is, just where I wanted it”, I glowed. I pulled the flashlight out, a high intensity one used in search and rescue missions. I had no idea how it came to be there. I didn’t care. I know what I had to do and I did just that. I turned it on. The result was, again, exactly what I wanted. Everything seemed to be going my way. I knew that, this time, I will prevail.
As soon as I turned it on, as I predicted, the rat-pack was blinded by light. The night vision equipment burnt the high beams into their eyes. They were screaming and groaning. They dropped their guns and started tugging, fiercely, at the equipment to get them off their eyes.
“Fuck you too, bitches”, I applauded myself.
In one swift move, I kneed the human shield right on his spine sending him reeling to the ground. I ran forward, grabbed one gun, kicked the rest away from the rat-pack. I aimed the gun at the rat-pack. I, finally, took control over.
Or did I?
“Wait”, I heard something inside me say. “Something isn’t quite right here”.
